Allyship is the act of actively supporting and advocating for equity-seeking groups of which you are not a member. By being an ally, you contribute toward a more just and inclusive workplace for everyone.

Allies can provide support in a variety of ways, such as:

  • Educating themselves about the experiences of equity-seeking groups

  • Speaking out against discrimination and oppression

  • Advocating for policies that benefit equity-seeking groups

  • Supporting organizations that work to promote social justice

There are nuances within allyship as no one person is the same. Allyship requires meaningful connections to account for those nuances and understand the people you plan to stand beside and use your privilege to support.

Allyship certainly isn’t a destination but rather continuous acts throughout your journey. It won’t always be easy but it is an important and necessary step in creating a more equitable society.
