How can we help?

Configuring goals and interests

When you first create a new community, you’ll see a hub setup guide. As a first step, you can choose a “base configuration” that includes best practice defaults for roles & segments, goals & interests and a conversation starter and survey questions for our networking experience (aka “Introductions”).

What are goals?

Goals are the key objectives that members want to achieve by using Ten Thousand Coffees. The list of goals is set by the hub admin. When members join, they’ll be able to select from these goals. We have a pre-configured list of goals that represent what most members are looking to get out of using the platform. Admins can add specific goals that are relevant to the community. A range of 10-20 goals is ideal to offer enough choice without overwhelming members during onboarding.

The best time to define goals is at the launch of the community. While you can add, remove or update goals at any time, most members set goals when they first sign up, so we recommend reviewing and defining your goals prior to launch. If, in the future, you wish to reconfigure your interests and/or goals, we recommend you reach out to your CSM or our Support Team to assist in updating them, as well as providing guidance on how to communicate the changes to your members so they are prompted to update their selections.

Goals are used in the matching algorithm to pair members with complementary goals.

How do I configure goals?

  1. Click on Hub Settings > Membership configurations
  2. Click Edit goals to open a dialogue. Add individual goals manually or copy and paste a list of values.
  3. Once you’ve added goals, you can drag and drop them into your desired order by clicking the 6 dots to the left of the value, or sort alphabetically.

What are interests?

While goals tend to be bigger, broader objectives, interests are more specific topic areas that members can select when they join the community. Interests are another attribute that hub admins can set. When members join, they’ll be able to select from these interests. Members will be matched with those who have the same interests as them.

We have a pre-configured list of the 20-30 most common interests and have found this is the ideal number for members to choose from when onboarding. Admins can add interests that are relevant to their organization or community group.

Similar to goals, it is best to define interests at the launch of the community. While changes can be made to interests later on, most members set their interests when they first sign up.
