What are Profile Segments?

Profile Segments are pieces of Member Data that are used to identify groups of members within your organization. Profile Segments require selection from a dropdown of available options, which is managed by Administrators.

Profile Segments can be input into 10KC either by:

  • Administrators sharing the information in a Member Data file, or

  • Users manually confirming information when claiming their profile

Components of a Profile Segment

Profile Segments have 4 components:

  • Segment Name: segment name that is visible to all members and Administrators
  • Segment Description: an optional, detailed description of the segment that's visible to all members and Administrators
  • Segment Values: the available options that are associated with a Profile Segment
  • Segment Settings: configurable options available to Administrators for each Profile Segment to determine how it functions

Types of Profile Segments

There are two types of Profile Segments — public and private. Public Profile Segments are visible to all members within the community. Private Profile Segments are visible to Administrators and, if configured, to the profile owner (see settings below); they are not visible to other members.

There are a number of settings available to customize for Profile Segments:

    • Toggle off to hide the Profile Segment from the onboarding experience
  • Editable by Profile Owner:
    • Toggle on to make the Profile Segment editable by the member
    • Toggle off to make this read-only for the member
  • Users can select multiple options:
    • Toggle on to make the field multi-select
    • Toggle off to make it single-select
    • Note: this cannot be changed

    • 10KC's best practice is to disable this. See FAQs for more information.

⭐️ 10KC Best Practice Recommendations

  • Your 10KC site has been pre-loaded with our best practice Profile Segments.
  • Reflect on your Program Objectives and how you would like to use member information to match members, target communications, and report on Program Success.
  • Consider what Member Data you'll need to manage your Program.
  • Hide Profile Segments from the onboarding experience if the data is being shared from a reliable source.
  • Show Profile Segments in the onboarding experience if the member may need to validate the data that you are importing.
  • The fewer fields that are visible during the Onboarding experience, the better.
  • Consider what information you'll need to show that the Program is successful.

The impact of Member Data on your 10KC Program

Member Data in 10KC is used to:

  • Match members: Use member data to create preferred or required rules for who should be matched together. For example, match members that are in different Departments to encourage cross-functional collaboration.
  • Target communications: You can send specific Invitation Campaigns and tailor the content to be most relevant to groups based on Profile Segments. You can also use member data to target programming. For example sending a women’s leadership program to your women’s ERG or inviting a specific group to an Office Hour.
  • Report on Program success: In the data dashboard, you can slice data views by specific segments. For example, measuring adoption by Department.
  • Enable Data-Driven Decision Making: With comprehensive member data at your disposal, you can make informed decisions about program improvements, new initiatives, and strategic directions, based on real insights into member engagement and outcomes.
  • Identify Members: Member data is available on the member profile and allows Administrators to view member profile information within 10KC.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is Role?

A: Role is a required segment and is typically used to segment members by seniority or experience — for example an individual contributor vs a VP, or a student vs an alumni.

Q: What's a Member Data file?

A: A Member Data file is a .csv or .xls file with member information. To learn more, click here

Q: What is 'Allow members to set matching rules'?

A: Toggling this feature on means that a member will be able to choose which member segments they get matched with for Networking Introductions. This creates a member-specific required matching rule. If the system cannot find a match within that segment, the member will not be matched. ⭐️ It's recommended that you consult your 10KC team before enabling this feature.

Q: Should I configure my Profile Segment as public or private?

A: Consider the following:

  • Is the information valuable for other members to see about their match? Make it public
  • Is this information personal to the member, and something they might not want to be shared with other members? Make it private
  • Do you, as an Administrator, want to target Office Hours to people based on this Profile Segment? Make it public
  • Is the data sensitive (e.g. Pay Band, High Potential Status)? Make it private
