One of the most important parts of creating an impactful Program is being crystal clear on why the Program exists. We capture this through clearly define the Purpose and Objectives of your Program. By carefully defining your Program's Purpose and Objectives and ensuring they are tightly linked to organizational KPIs, you set your program on the path to achieving meaningful, measurable results.
Steps for Confirming your Program Purpose and Objectives:
Step 1
Consider why this Program matters to your organization. What would you like this Program to drive at an organizational level? Why are you investing in this Program?
✅ Document 1 - 3 sentences on the Purpose of this Program for your organization. Consider who you are offering the Program to.
Example: This Program exists to foster a culture of continuous learning and development for every employee within our organization, while supporting inclusivity and enhancing employee's sense of belonging.
Step 2
Consider who cares about the success of this Program, and how we will measure success. Take the time to reflect on your OKRs, KPIs or business-level goals. Which of these do you envision this Program driving? Get creative and leave the how to us.
✅ Capture 3 - 5 organizational goals that you'd like this Program to drive. This can be employee engagement survey results, HR metrics, OKRs, etc.

- Engagement
- Career Mobility
Step 3
Using the above, create the Objectives of your Program. Think about 'what do we want to accomplish' and 'for who'.
✅ Create 3 - 5 Objectives for your Program. Try to create Objectives that are measurable through the above, and that clarify the intended population(s).
Examples:
- Improve employee's sense of inclusion and belonging across our diverse talent populations
- Create opportunities for talent to explore career opportunities within our organization
- Retain top talent by offering professional development opportunities for high performers
- Improve Time to Productivity for new hires
Step 4
Leave the rest to us! We will fill in the blanks and bring your Program to life.
Examples:
- Improve employee's sense of inclusion and belonging across our diverse talent populations by offering Office Hours on DEI topics
- Create opportunities for talent to explore career opportunities within our organization by enabling Networking Introductions to introduce people outside of their role, and prompting them to discuss 'a day in the life' of different roles and departments
- Retain top talent by offering professional development opportunities for high performers by offering a High Potential Mentorship program
- Improve Time to Productivity for new hires by offering an Onboarding Mentorship Program and introducing new hires to more tenured employees
Who's involved?
The Purpose & Objectives are created by the Executive Sponsor and shared with the Program Team that's helping us build your Program. It's referenced ongoing as we make program decisions that are strategically aligned and bring other team members along for the journey of building and rolling out your Program.
What's next?
After we create your Program Purpose and Objectives for your core team, we will adapt them into a member-facing statements that clearly show participants why the Program exist, why it matters, and what they can hope to achieve by participating. We'll also revisit them annually to ensure continuous alignment with your priorities.
