Opening (5 minutes)
- Welcome & Warm-Up: "Welcome, everyone! Thanks for being here. We're all about team communication today. Let's start by sharing our names and one thing we're awesome at communicating... or maybe not so awesome at, that's okay too!" (Host goes first, keeping it light and relatable)
Section 1: Cultivating Influence Through Effective Communication (20 minutes)
- Trust Fall (Metaphorically): "What does trust feel like in a team? What builds it, and what breaks it?" (Open discussion, capture key words on a flip chart)
- Influence Idol: "Think of a leader (or anyone!) who inspires you to take action. What is it about the way they communicate that makes you want to follow them?" (Share in pairs, then with the group)
- Communication Conundrum: "Let's get real. Imagine your team is facing a major deadline, but morale is low. How do you rally the troops without being a cheerleader?" (Small groups brainstorm different communication approaches, then share)
Section 2: Fostering Transparency (20 minutes)
- Open Book or Closed Doors? "Think of a time when a lack of transparency caused problems at work. Conversely, share a time when open communication saved the day." (Volunteers share stories)
- Transparency Spectrum: "Transparency isn't all or nothing. Where do you draw the line? What information do you share with your team, and what do you keep confidential?" (Large group discussion)
- "Dear Boss" Letter: "Imagine your team could anonymously send you a letter about communication. What might they say? Now, flip it. What would you want to say back to them?" (Reflect individually, then share in pairs)
Section 3: Practical Tools and Resources (15 minutes)
- Toolbox Time: "What communication tools or tricks do you already use with your team? Slack channels, weekly check-ins, post-it notes?" (Round-robin sharing of tips and hacks)
- Communication Makeover: "Let's take a real-life communication you need to have with your team. How could you tweak it to make it more effective? Maybe it's an email, a meeting, or just a conversation." (Small groups help each other revise)
- Resource Round-Up: (Optional) "I've brought a few cheat sheets and resources if anyone wants to dive deeper into this. Feel free to grab them after."
Closing (5 minutes)
- Lightbulb Moment: "What's one 'aha' moment you're taking away from today? Share it with us!" (Quick go-around)
- Challenge Accepted: "Pick one communication skill you want to try this week. Tell your partner so you hold yourself accountable!"
- Thanks & Farewell: "Thank you for being such an awesome group! Remember, communication is a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets!"
Extra Tips:
- Keep it Engaging: Incorporate polls, games, or even silly props to keep the energy up.
- Relatable Scenarios: Use examples that people can easily connect to in their own work lives.
- Celebrate Successes: Highlight and celebrate when someone shares a great communication strategy.
Note: This conversation guide is a starting point and can be adapted to fit the specific needs and interests of the group. Be creative with interactive exercises and scenarios to make the workshop engaging and impactful.
