10KC's Best Practice Recommendations
10KC offers a curated list of Goals that align with our curated Programs and Pathways.
Goals should be written in a way that completes the sentence "I want to learn more about..." or "I can offer knowledge on...".
A range of 10-20 goals is ideal to offer enough choice without overwhelming members during onboarding.
The best time to define Goals is at the launch of the community. While you can add, remove or update goals at any time, most members set goals when they first sign up, so we recommend reviewing and defining your goals prior to launch.
This 10KC Best Practice list of Goals was selected based on research and review of thousands of organizations and their business objectives to ensure what is most important is included:
Allyship & Inclusion Skills
Build Personal Brand
Build Professional Network
Build Leadership Skills
Career Opportunities
Cross-Functional Knowledge
Manage Relationships
Mentorship Skills
New Role & Career Path Exploration

Upskilling & Continuing Education
The Importance of Goals in Mentorship and Networking
In Mentorship and Networking, goals are important because they provide:
Clarity and Focus: Goals provide a clear roadmap, injecting both mentorship and networking experiences with purpose and direction. They help members understand what they want to achieve and what areas they wish to develop.
Motivation and Accountability: Well-defined Goals inspire motivation and foster accountability. Members are more likely to feel driven and stay on track with regular progress updates.
Outcome Measurement: Goals serve as tangible success metrics. They allow both the Program Manager and the members to measure progress and acknowledge milestones along the way.
The Power of Goals in Participant Matching
Goals don't just guide individuals; they're instrumental in creating optimal matches between mentors and mentees or between networkers. Here's how:
Skill Alignment: Matching members based on overlapping Goals ensures a shared focus and creates fertile ground for knowledge transfer.
Compatibility: Goals can reveal complementary working styles, values, or desired outcomes, increasing the likelihood of positive and enduring connections.
Expectations Management: Clearly communicated goals set realistic expectations for both sides of the mentoring or networking relationship, leading to a smoother experience.
Goal-Driven Learning
Goals have a transformative impact on the overall learning experience:
Personalized Development: With goals as an anchor, mentors or networking contacts can tailor sessions, resources, and advice to address the participant's specific needs.
Actionable Feedback: Goals provide a framework for meaningful feedback, ensuring guidance is directly tied to desired outcomes and skill development.
Growth Reflection: Regular goal reviews offer opportunities to reflect on accomplishments, recalibrate as needed, and celebrate progress.
By championing goal-setting as a core principle, Program Managers empower participants to take ownership of their growth. Purposeful goals enhance matching, maximize learning, and elevate the overall experience. It's through this intentional approach that 10KC helps individuals reach their full potential and build lasting, valuable connections.
